As a neurosurgeon with fellowship training in Spine surgery and neurosurgical oncology, and presently focused on neurosurgical trauma and degenerative spinal diseases, I am leveraging qualitative and quantitative data to identify factors that influence neurosurgical outcomes. My research focuses on the elderly frail population, vulnerable groups, chronic disease, substance abuse and the role these factors may play in neurosurgical pathology including brain tumors, spinal disease, and more so traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. I have been the site PI for 2 clinical trials, one of which focused on traumatic cervical spinal cord injury.
I enjoy working with medical students, and residents as well as faculty from other departments and endeavor to encourage novice researchers to increase and enhance their academic output. To this end I act as a guide, and mentor identifying or giving them a research question and then working with them to bring about academic presentations and publications.
My current research consists of evaluating our data and outcomes, through multiple retrospective IRB studies, at our level I University hospital setting, where we also are a safety net hospital center and focus on disorders such as traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, spinal infections such as discitis osteomyelitis, degenerative spinal pathology and tumors. I collaborate with a diverse group of specialists across our University hospital system and am looking at translating our research outcomes into practice changes that will benefit our patients and providers. My plan is to work collaboratively with other specialists to bring in and develop clinical trials and obtain grant funding in order to promote the sustainable development of partnerships and initiatives to improve brain and spine care.
